Tesla plans to produce a more affordable version of its Model Y SUV in Shanghai by 2026, reducing production costs by at least 20%, according to Reuters. The move aims to strengthen Tesla’s market share in China, where local competitors have gained ground. The new model, developed under the project name “E41,” will also be manufactured in Europe and North America. This strategy comes as Tesla faces rising competition and slowing sales in Western markets.
The vehicle, described by Chinese media as a “lower Model Y,” aligns with Tesla’s earlier statements about launching affordable models by mid-2025. These models will blend next-gen and current platform components, sharing assembly lines with existing vehicles.
However, there are many unanswered questions, including what the new EV will look like and what powertrain options will be available. It’s likely that the American automaker will use the same electric motors and battery packs as those found in the current Model 3 and Model Y.
The move comes as Tesla has seen it’s once near insurmountable lead in electric vehicles slip with its first-ever sales decline in 2024 and market share shrinking in the European Union, the United States, and China.
THE TAKEAWAY
Tesla has long-promised a more affordable car for the masses and with sales under pressure, the need for a game-changing vehicle has never been clearer for the EV giant.
